[ he'll go to a nearby table while rondo does that, taking a quick glance around to make sure it's just the two of them in this section. the place is big, so he's sure they're fine, here, with a piece of home. ]

Well. A mix of stuff. About what we got from our trip, before yours, 'cause I talked to Pesti about 'em - and also about the whole monster affinity partners thing.

I know you're not mine. [ adding this as if in reassurance, as he's opening his satchel. ] 'cause I'm the last golem, now. The whole... monster inside of us thing, the thing that kinda aches..? It hurt, the Sunday after Pickles, Mr. Ichiban, Karma, Nona, and Erin all died. I figure if I can tell more people about it, the better, so maybe we can know about it before it happens - hopefully anyone else that's lost their partner's been spreadin' it.

[ oh! oh, he looks surprised, at first when alfyn just TELLS him his monster, and then - a little touched, that he trusts him so much? as he's coming down the ladder with his arms full of books from orsterra, he sets them down on the table. ]

So that's what happens... I was wondering. [ oof. his expression goes soft, a little sympathetic, and he absently reaches up to rub at his chest once he sets his books down. ] I'm sorry to hear that.

I heard that... you can find someone else to pair with, right? If their partner is also gone. [ a little grimace. ] Oh! And... you're right, about spreading the news, I heard... someone told me that if you're... um, paired to your person, and that other person dies... as long as you are able to find someone unpartnered to match up with, you'd be safe.

So... maybe - that means you could really help someone, Alfyn. Depending on what happens.

[ truly, it's only been the chaos of everything that's happened that alfyn hasn't told him sooner. he says it with such confidence that rondo is safe, that he can trust it to rondo, that he doesn't even look up as he takes out a small wooden box and something wrapped in his makeshift bandages. ]

It's... alright. I was talkin' to somebody else about who it might've been, but I can't really know for sure, now, I think. [ he gives him a bit of a wan smile as he does look up, now.

but then he blinks in surprise with this information, straightening. ]

I wonder how best it'd be to go about doin' that... about findin' 'em and lettin' 'em know that there's someone out there willin' to partner up. I don't... I wasn't too sure about findin' somebody, even after losin' the other golem, since if somethin' happened to me they would suffer, too.

But if there's a kinda net in place to save people... I'd be willin' to do it.

[ heh. he though alfyn might understand. ] That's how I thought about it, too. It's a chance to help people - even if it's a one time chance, it's a way to keep someone from being doomed.

[ like a safety net. that gets a smile, warm, as he settles down, starting to sort the books into fiction and nonfiction. ]

I think... we need to try and find out if people have lost their partners. I wish there was a safe way to do so, but... I don't know if I'm the right person to try to brainstorm one.

[ it requires a lot of trust to just say these things - its part of why alfyn telling rondo so suddenly made his heart warm. he looks a little more thoughtful, frowning at the cover of The Accursed Night, and then over at the box. ] What's that...?

Mm, and we can just... pay it forward, to stop us from losin' people.

[ a frown pulls at his expression for a moment, though, confounded by the question of how they'd do this. ]

I'm not smart enough for this kinda thing. But I'll think about it - maybe someone else'll have an idea. Or we can use the bulletin at the pyre... though I couldn't write a message, it'd be obvious it was me 'cause my handwritin' is awful.

Alright, so, there was this room? Just outta nowhere, when we were makin' our way back to the village, Thursday night. And we didn't have a lot of time to look at everythin', 'cause there were these voices comin' from the other side of a door - but there was so much. Things that you'd see in a scholar's collection.

[ he opens the box, and unwraps the object so that rondo can see them.

1. A small wooden box, with runes engraved into its cover. Inside is a torn-off wing. Even bisected from its body, it flaps on occasion, charged with some kind of pure, holy energy.
2. A glass keepsake bottle, plugged up tight with a cork. Inside is a very large, fossilized millipede with an overabundance of eyes, unmoving but unsettling to look upon.

Dunno. Ingredients, maybe? Pesti said they've got magic in 'em, which I can definitely feel with that wing after spendin' so much time around Phili. And to be careful. I should ask Lavi about his box... [ he taps on the lip of the box so that the thing flaps. ] Pesti's gonna look into it, but I figure...

If somethin' happens to me, I'm gonna leave 'em to you, so that they stay in trusted hands.

Yes, the wing feels... it's a bit like the Flame. [ even just resting his hand on the box, he can feel that, too - carefully, he passes the holy one back, then examines the bottle. hmm... ]

...You should ask Miss Ashlyn, as well. Is it only you that has these? [ ... ] And... you didn't have to make a deal for them or anything, did you?

A little, yeah. [ he'll carefully shut the box again, smoothing his fingers across the surface as he thinks of ophilia. of the feeling of the sacred flame in his hands, small as it was in comparison to her holy light. ]

No, we didn't have to make a deal for any of it. Just defeated Delilah, and then... [ gestures at the creepy millipede. ] I'm the one that's got the stuff 'cause I was able to carry it all in my satchel, and it's just stayed that way - we've all seen 'em, though, and Tot and Geto have grabbed 'em before.

[ hmm... ]

...In ours, we were told that... we could make a deal with Raphael. He referenced the village and our situation, and said he could give us items to help - but only if we agreed to give up Hope. I refused - I wouldn't have accepted it no matter what. But...

[ ... ]

If you were able to get them, and we were as well, I think... That may have been true, that they are helpful. If that's the case, then that's four of these objects we as a whole have our hands on.

... think, if that was the case for ours, that I wouldn't be the one that got to have the items.

[ he puts the box in his satchel again, leaving it at that. he would have chosen hope, too, clearly. ]

We're gonna have to be prepared, this week, for another group. Pesti told me it was just another side effect of Scawwy - like how a new place pops up every week, just that these ones are dangerous. And... maybe based on memories, in some way. [ grim, there, but moving on. ] We need to take care of the people that return, and make sure that what they have stays safe with them, if they bring somethin' like these things back.

[ that there were only two... that's especially good to hear. maybe that means that rondo and mathis' choice wouldn't have devastating consequences on scawwy, though... he's not entirely sure that lavi and ashlyn's won't, either. it's hard to say.
