[ we are in the church currently, and alfyn stands squinting at the runes when not occasionally warily squinting at the stain glass. but he still tries to see if there's anything familiar about the writing, or this place overall. it's not like any church he's seen before, after all...

and then the phantom bell gongs above them, and he jumps, swearing. ]

Gods! What the hell!? [ clutches his heart like the old man meme ] Is there somebody up there?

[ todomatsu also jumps, though it's much less of a reaction than he would have had if it were still dark out. ]

If not, they might have it on some kind of timer or something.

[ glances up at the ceiling, looking annoyed. ]

Either way, that thing's way too loud.

[ if it were dark out, all bets would be off. alfyn squints balefully up at the ceiling, taking a deep breath, then exhaling, hand going from his chest to scrub his face. ]

Jeez, you're telling me. This village is too quiet for a thing like that.

Though if anybody's up there, it'd be the first sign of life 'sides us, the rats, and the leeches.

I think that'd almost be creepier than there not being any, if they've been hiding themselves from us for a whole day...

... eurgh, yeah, probably right.

[ he's looking around for any stairs to get up to the bell. ]

Though, dunno how they'd get up there, from what all we can see.

[ well happy national fucking leech day, i guess todomatsu's ready to get torched. this is, unfortunately, far from the worst thing that's ever physically happened to him, but trauma-wise, it's pretty far up there!!!!

once alfyn is looking at him up close, he'll see some of that inky writing in a couple of spots on his back, maybe mildly obscured by leeches: the dark, and being alone at night, and being humiliated. (and dying a virgin again, but let's ignore that one.) ]

[ the frown that pulls on his mouth is sympathetic, worried, and deeply pensive - not only for the leeches, but also for the writing that he sees inked across todomatsu's skin. his right now is saving him, but also not being able to save her, not being enough and not doing enough alternating.

he's not paying too much attention to it right now, as he sets down the bits of wood he collected from the broken benches alongside his satchel, flipping it open and taking out a mortar and pestle. ]

So, you're not gonna feel a single sting of pain as long as you stay still, alright? You don't gotta be all tense and not breathe, but just no extra movement. You'll definitely feel the warmth off the fire, it's just not gonna be the whole damn torch up close and personal.

[ a little bit of water from a mason jar goes into the mortar, followed by a velvety soft looking leaf from his flower crown that he pulls out, and some small white flowers clustered like a cloud. it gets left there for a minute as he burns the end of one of the pieces of wood on the torch first. ]

I can't put a bandage around your neck, since that could be dangerous for you if you get into trouble, but I'm gonna make a salve to put on all the spots that should help keep them from getting infected and will stop the bleeding.

[ well he is definitely going to be super tense and barely breathe, thanks. he kind of wants to ask exactly how this works, what the fire does to the leeches to make them let go, but he also feels like he's close to being sick right now and decides maybe he should ask after it's over.

he swallows. ]

Yeah. Okay.

[ closes his eyes tight... god. this kind of thing was funnier when it was them and chibita pranking each other as kids, right? why does everything feel so off? ]

[ because it's a horror genre, not a slice of life comedy, bud.

alfyn hums an affirmative and moves to set the torch down as carefully as he can, grabbing the flat part of the mason jar lid and getting to work. the lid he warms up in his palm, so that it won't be cold on todomatsu's skin, and then -

he just carefully slides it parallel to the leech on his neck, at the same time burning it on the body so that he can just pop the thing off without it puking up its food into the bite wound. ]

There. One down, easy as pie.

[ and he will repeat this process as many times as he has to. ]

[ we'll do the refectory, since it's a stone's throw from the theater where they just were and is one of the least creepy places (comparably). he's still got his axe out instead of snapping it into the loop on the back of his belt, even though they're indoors and there's probably? not anything that's going to jump out at them here.

he does seem to position himself closer to the doors in comparison to todomatsu, like he's putting himself between possible threats after the discovery of aventurine this morning.

but he does scrub his face with his free hand for a moment, sweeping it through the bedhead of his spiked hair. ]

Not sure if any of us are gonna wanna stay over in the theater after this. Gods.

[ ugh. yeah. he's just going to sit down at a table and stare at the ceiling. ]

Yeah, no offense to three out of the four of you guys, but I am so done with that place.

[ that makes him snort a little ruefully. boy karma did not get on the right foot with totty. ]

Figure that's fair. Tryin' to go back in was... weird. Like a portal opened up after we left with Miss Laudna and hid everythin' that's busted.

Yeah... I don't know what that was about. [ ... ] Pretty creepy, though, right? If they can change our reality — or at least how we see it — just like that.

"Creepy" is this whole place in a nutshell. I've... seen portals and stuff, before. This just feels wrong as a whole, and they're manipulatin' everythin' after already gettin' us here.

What kind of portals do you usually see?

[ he's not even sure what that's supposed to mean... ]

Usually the bastard we're supposed to be fightin' uses 'em to disappear or unleash somethin' for us to fight.

[ this is said so dryly that the dislike is obvious. ]

This stuff is... neutral, compared to that? But the feelin' everywhere is just bad, and it's hidin' all the stuff that happened last night, so. Creepy.

Huh... yeah, okay.

It does really make me wonder what else is out here that we're not seeing.

[ seated at the bar of the winery is alfyn! he's got a drink, yes, but it's only maybe had a few drinks taken from it as he sits there with a spread of herbs and a mason jar on the other side from the drink. he's absently grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle until he gets it to the consistency and color that he wants.

he just looks frustrated as he works, and even with his ponytail there's clearly ink that yells losing more people across the back of his neck. but when he hears steps coming down the stairs into the basement, he lifts his head up and looks to see who it is.

seeing todomatsu, he offers a wan, tired smile. ]

... come to take a load off?

[ ah... yeah, hard to miss that. ]

Yeah, something like that.

[ he'll pour himself a glass and look at everything that's laid out on the counter. ]

Making medicines, huh? Is that all from the cult's garden?

[ he's trying not to pay attention to anyone's stupid ink, including his own. kind of hard to know it's on his back though. ]

Feels kinda like we're gonna need a lot of it.

[ he goes back to work, deft and familiar, even as they talk. ]

But, yeah, it is. I figure I'll ask Pesti if I can get back into it since... Death was the one that took me, before. Might be nice to figure out some kinda herbal wash for bathin', too.

I doubt they'd lock you out now if one of them let you in before, especially since... like you said, probably going to need a lot more of it now.

Bath stuff really would be nice too, though... or laundry detergent.

Yeah, I figure it might be nice to have some extra hands... and Pesti seems nice, themself, so. It'll probably work out.

Dunno what I can do about laundry, but I can see what herbs I can mix together.

Yeah, they're not too bad.

[ sits down and takes a sip of his sad wine juice ]

Are you going to keep sticking around at the theater, you think?

[ he's reminded that his sad wine juice exists, reaching over and sort of half-grinding with the pestle since he isn't supporting the mortar anymore so he can grab his cup. ]

Maybe. Might stay somewhere else every now and then, but I don't wanna overcrowd if someone else wants a spot. Just... gonna not be there for a little bit.

[ nods... he also feels awkward about the overcrowding thing, though it's not about concern for anyone else's comfort so much as concern that he'll be disliked for showing up at places uninvited. it's why he spent the whole week cycling through different sleeping locations, so he wouldn't overstay his welcome too badly in any one place. ]

That's fair.

...Could you bring the barrel back here to the cellar when you have a chance? Camille-san doesn't want to have it there if she's the only one.
