Nowadays the hellebore plant has strong associations with serenity, peace, and tranquility, but this has not always been the case. In Victorian times the flowers of the hellebore plant signified delirium, and some cultures today still see the flowers as representing stress, anxiety, and scandal. Also known as the midnight ruffle, black hellebore leaves, root, and underground stem (rhizome) are used to make medicine. Be careful not to confuse this plant with white hellebore, which has been used as a poison. Despite serious safety concerns, people take black hellebore for nausea, worms, kidney infections, colds, and constipation.

... It's a small island with very little on it... but just outside the manor, there's a forest where fairies are said to live.

It didn't seem as ominous as the forest here, though...

Fairies, huh... they're mostly stories back home, too, so I bet it's a magic lookin' place. [ but. ] Depends on the forest, I think. Some of 'em are real ominous, others... it's just a matter of a bunch of animals and smaller, less dangerous monsters makin' a home there. These places really cover the dangerous aspects though.

I think it just looked like a regular forest... The fairies are easy to miss if you don't look hard enough.

... Say, you can make medicine, right? Do you think any of the plants out here could have medicinal properties?

Oh! Yeah, some of 'em are. The, uh, golden-leaf trees around that creepy white tree? Those're aspen, and they're good for pain management - you can also dry and grind down the bark to make it into a kinda meal to add into your bread makin'. And some of the green plants, too...

I talked to Pesti about the creepy tree, and the person in it and the tree... they're carin' for each other, and just want to be left in peace. I dunno about the stuff from the spigot, but...

What about something like... sleeping medicine? Could you make that?

Mm, yeah, probably? Valerian and lavender... maypops... poppy could probably be used, too. I don't have anythin' from home that'd enhance that, so it might not induce sleep immediately after being consumed, but it'd do the job.

Could it stop someone from killing? Even under a monster's influence, if you're put to sleep... it shouldn't be able to do anything.

Might at least slow 'em down so they can't do anythin'... disorient 'em so maybe you could lead 'em into some kinda trap. There's lots of places around here, like a wall I leaned on earlier to get a banner off it and it opened up into a new room.

If she winds up targeted, instead of attackin' somebody, then maybe she could use it against whoever was attackin' her instead. But if she stays awake and feels her monster gettin' ornery...

If she uses it before we fall asleep on Thursday, she won't be a threat to anyone. Then no one will have to hurt her.
