Go figure the food is awful, too... [ we are in the refectory, but he still tries to finish the bland, terrible food as he walks around the building with it while he eats. he squints at the door that leads down to the cellar. alfyn carefully opens it with a free hand, before using the toe of his boot to open it the rest of the way, peering down the stairs cautiously.

over his shoulder, as he notices that their resident sword is here: ] Hey, Iwa, you been down here yet?

Down? [ peers over his shoulder, down into the cellar. ] Not yet. I don't want to overcrowd in small areas.

[ he is so big. and now he has the naginata? that makes it more difficult. ]

[ still does not question iwatooshi using his height to loom, gaze wary down the passage. ]

Well, just the two of us, now, and I dunno about you but I'm used to working with real big fellas. [ reaching back to pat him on the arm. ] Sword's a lot longer than Olberic's, but he carries the huge suckers that're bigger than some of the girls here. Wanna check it out and clear it?

I am the biggest one, where I'm from.

[ so he's familiar in that sense lmao. so he nods! lesgo! ]

Small areas put me at a disadvantage, but as long as I'm careful, I can still fight, if we need to.

I bet. [ looking at him. you are so large.

but, still, he nods and sets aside the bowl he was digging into, reaching to tug his axe free of the loop in his belt. ]

I can head down first, maybe? Check ahead so you know how much room you've got to move in?

[ he gives the axe a curious look. weapon to weapon communication (no) ]

Mm... Only if you're certain. If anyone gets injured, I'd rather it be me.

[ he can handle it! but most of you are fragile humans! ]

[ well, kinda, since he'd be able to notice this kind of thing. it's a big ol' axe that's clearly seen many battles, hence being battle-tested, but has been well taken care of over the many years that it's seen use.

he gives it an expert spin, and iwatooshi a smile. ]

Well, fair 'nough. But it's not nearly as bad looking as any of the dungeons I've had to go down into.

Either of us gets hurt, I can patch us up. I made my robe and that fella Rondo's into strips for bandages.

[ ah. a good master, then. he's glad to see it. ]

Dungeons, huh? An explorer, are you? And a healer. I'm not sure if it would work on me, but I appreciate it, anyway.

[ usually it wouldn't! he doesn't know he's effectively human yet! so he focuses on adjusting his hold on the nagi to accommodate for the space and nods. ]

[ poor iwatushy, in for a surprise. alfyn just blinks at him, because what. healing works on everybody. ]

Being a healer came first, then an explorer. Needed to set out to learn more about being an apothecary, so I could get better, and then I met a bunch of friends on their own travels. Kinda worked out from there, y'know?

[ down they go, though, as he peers low in an attempt to get a peek. ]

So that's how it is! You take your studies seriously - how admirable. And you're very lucky to have met friends along the way.

[ iwatooshi will just have to focus on trying to hit his head or weapon on anything. the curse of being big. ]

I am a touken danshi. I've traveled to many places for my masters, but never outside of our country before now. This is a new experience for me!

[ alfyn is seated on the ground behind the cabin, near the water, using the edge of his axe to carefully try to carve a short stick into a point as he watches movement of fish beneath the surface. he's making sure to not dull the edge of the blade, but he's only partially paying attention to his task.

he keeps reaching like he's trying to rub away the ink that's visible on his forearms, where his sleeves don't reach, but he's also trying to not pay too much attention to the words at the same time.

Oh, hey Iwa. You get settled in somewhere today with the weird feeling we all got about "home"?

[ for once he will keep his voice down because he knows about fishing! lucky you, alfyn. ]

I am! We've decided on roommates and started cleaning the place up... it was very dusty, before. It's been a productive morning!

[ as for the tattoo, iwa's is fully visible on his arm, though the black ink could almost be part of his glove. it says that he's has killed... an extraordinarily large number. i don't have an exact one but definitely over a thousand. ]

You're looking to fish? I'd join you, if we had the tools.

We're still figuring things out in the theater, but as long as nobody steps on the stage it's fine I think.

that is so many people, iwatooshi. but at the same time, he... saw the profiles, and his age, and lives in a place with active wars. so he's probably going to handle this out of context better than most people would.

the most visible of his is a regret, simply stating saving him. ]

Clearbrook is surrounded by, well, brooks and rivers. So we got used to fishing with what we could, even if it was sloshing around with our bare hands. I'm not quick enough for that kinda thing, though.

We could always try to repair it, but we'd need to ask for tools.

[ they're already asking for a lot, though... or that's how it feels. iwatooshi doesn't want to be greedy.

anyway his eyes do linger on the tattoo for a long moment, but he's unsure if he should ask. is bringing up painful memories really necessary? ]

I know what you mean. My size alone would scare them off, and the naginata isn't as good for stabbing as a spear would be.

[ we're outside of the theater, actually, as alfyn prowls around the exterior like he can actually find anything else here despite having done it before during the investigation himself.

he's got his axe in his hand, a death grip around it but in a hold that tells he's prepared to use it if he has to, instead of snapping it into the loop on the back of his belt. when he sees iwatooshi, his head lifts up from looking around on the ground. despite the tension in his body, there's visible relief to see him alright. ]

You find anythin' excitin' after we were able to leave the pyre?

[ he is making a note of how alfyn holds his body and his axe, as if he's ready to strike at any moment. how familiar. ]

Besides the posters, and the flames changing color? [ shakes his head. ] No. Did you?

[ much like the rest of the week, there's assorted ink writing on his skin and showing through his clothes, but he tries to smother them a bit as he crosses his arms over his chest briefly. the axe slides down in his grip as it loosens, until he catches the handle just below the head and holds it against his shoulder. ]

... flame reminds me of somethin' from home. Be more comfortin' if it wasn't the situation that it is. [ but alfyn takes a deep breath. ] Miss Laudna was with me 'n Todomatsu, here in the theater. She found Aventurine under the stage after jumpin' down.

...It's strange. She asked for my help to retrieve his body, but nothing looked out of place when we arrived.

Usually it's a sign of hope, somethin' to ward off darkness - whether it be literal or the powers of darkness. "May the Sacred Flame guide you."

[ he rubs his thumbs into his biceps and frowns. ]

This doesn't feel right, though. [ a shake of the head ] Especially when that's happenin'. It's like a portal's opened up to hide the damages, 'cause the theater was a downright mess. What kinda power do you need to conceal that? And in a lot of places, too, considerin'.

I see. To take a symbol of hope and use it this way... You have my sympathy, Alfyn-dono.

[ hope is too important to be used in such a way. ]

Considerable power, for certain. Even my master can't do such things, nor would they even if they could. I don't understand why anything would need to be hidden at all.

[ seated at the bar of the winery is alfyn! he's got a drink, yes, but it's only maybe had a few drinks taken from it as he sits there with a spread of herbs and a mason jar on the other side from the drink. he's absently grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle until he gets it to the consistency and color that he wants.

he just looks frustrated as he works, and even with his ponytail there's clearly ink that yells losing more people across the back of his neck. but when he hears steps coming down the stairs into the basement, he lifts his head up and looks to see who it is.

seeing iwatooshi, he offers a wan, tired smile. ]

... come to take a load off?

A good drink never hurt, especially with the past few days.

[ glad for the company, he returns the smile. and though he sees the ink, he decides not against bringing it up. no more words are needed there.

so instead, he nods to the mortar and pestle as he goes to fetch a drink of his own. ] Preparing more medicine?

Here, here. [ a sword after his own heart. but he returns to the practiced motions, wrist twisting, muscles working, focus downwards until the paste-like substance is a soft yellow green. ]

Mmhm. Before... Death took me to the garden, and let me take some herbs for medicines. Used some for Tot, Vin, and now Karlach, and... I just feel like we're gonna need a lot of it.

Rather be better safe than sorry, if somethin' else winds up happenin' after this.

[ iwatooshi watches, curious. neither of his masters have been apothecaries of any sort, and he has yet to meet the one sword who would be similar. it's fascinating to see... admirable, to dedicate one's life to healing others. ]

How kind of them, and of you. Are you still allowed in their garden to get what you need, then?

I'm gonna ask Pesti, since I think they're the next one that would be takin' care of it? At least from what Famine said from when we first met the bunch.

[ he taps the pestle against the edge of the mortar to get any excess off of it, before going to pour it carefully into the mason jar. it's getting about half full, now. ]

... somebody saved my life, once, with medicine. I'll keep payin' that forward until the day I die, even in this place.
