Nowadays the hellebore plant has strong associations with serenity, peace, and tranquility, but this has not always been the case. In Victorian times the flowers of the hellebore plant signified delirium, and some cultures today still see the flowers as representing stress, anxiety, and scandal. Also known as the midnight ruffle, black hellebore leaves, root, and underground stem (rhizome) are used to make medicine. Be careful not to confuse this plant with white hellebore, which has been used as a poison. Despite serious safety concerns, people take black hellebore for nausea, worms, kidney infections, colds, and constipation.

[ out at the ranch... petting the sheep. kate has a sunflower dress on today! yay for clothes!

she tries to walk away but one of the sheep just follows her all the way to the fence, where she sees alfyn. ]

... The animals here are a bit needy...

[ alfyn hasn't been dressed just yet, so he's still in his usual outfit - but smiles at seeing kate in a new dress. ]

You're lookin' sunny, Kate. [ before actually addressing her comment, peering down over the fence at the sheep. ] Well, that's not a bad thing if they're friendly. Want me to distract 'em?

[sootprints]

[ oh! she nods. ]

Are you good with animals?

[concoctive]

Decent enough. [ he'll just clamber over the fence instead of figuring out the gate. ] My friend H'aanit is better with 'em, can understand what they say. Or feel, at least, I think.

Hey there buddy! You're just a friendly guy, huh?

[sootprints]

[ the sheep meeehs at him. ]

It must be nice to be able to understand animals... I don't think I'm good at it.

[concoctive]

Baaa yourself. [ he lowers his hand to pet the sheep, distracting it so kate can scootch around him. ]

She's got a leopard companion that she has whole conversations with, it's real interestin' to watch. I can't do anythin' nearly like that, but I'm kinda used to bein' around 'em every now and then. You spend much time with any animals back home?

[ scooching! bless you alfyn. ]

Not normally. They aren't allowed in the manor.

[ that makes sense to him, so he nods. ]

Would you change that, if you could? Not anythin' like a sheep or a cow, but the cats, or Dani the dog they got here.

I would. I think a dog would be nice to have.

Big one or a little one? Or I guess Pickles-sized, but I don't think there's really any dog out there quite like Pickles.

Pickles truly is one of a kind.

[ there's a small, but unmistakable laugh. ]

Maybe a big dog... I think they would be very fun to play with.

[concoctive]

Under better circumstances, it'd be good to introduce him and Mr. Gale to my friend back home. He's a professor - they'd have a lot to talk about.

[ very funny. but his heart is warmed by this small laugh. ]

Big dogs can be scary lookin', but most of the ones I've met have all been great big softies.
